Amir Lichter cites the need to combine lasers with radio frequency and other energy sources

In Hank Hogan's article "Surgical Lasers Make the Cut" at photonics.com, Amir Lichter, Vice President of global R&D at Lumenis, spoke of the need to cut the cost and size of laser-based surgery systems and also cited the need to combine lasers with radio frequency and other energy sources.

According to the article, Lichter explained that "[combining lasers with RF and other energy sources] will allow each energy source to offer its own unique capabilities. For instance, lasers can cauterize a blood vessel opened up during a procedure and physicians particularly appreciate that capability".

Lichter also went further in describing future trends to include integration of a laser into the OR and connecting it with the patient database. The article quoted Lichter as saying “Just imagine if a doctor can see an image of an internal organ with extreme magnification and target his laser device exactly to the point he wishes to hit. Not only this — a doctor may even be able to see the results in real time and change the parameters of the treatment accordingly...”
